Quick Party Dishes for Kids (and Adults): Strawberry Cupcake Puppy Chow

In need of a fast dish for a party or get together?  Or the kids want a snack that’s not out of a plastic wrapper?  I’ve got the snappy solution.  This literally took me less than 15 minutes to throw together.  I swear by the 13 minute mark I was already shoveling in handful number four because I loved it that much.  And my girls were saying “Mom always makes the best stuff” by minute 14.  So simple and tasty, here’s all you do:

Strawberry Cupcake Puppy Chow

Recipe adapted from So Very Blessed
A quick and easy snack to make for your kids that the whole family will enjoy! 15 minutes and done!

5 Cups Chex Cereal
10 oz Almond Bark (vanilla flavored)
1 ½ Cups Strawberry Cake Mix (dry)
½ Cup Powdered Sugar
1-2 tsp. vegetable shortening
2-3 Tbs. Sprinkles

1. Melt Almond Bark according to directions on package, adding in vegetable shortening before melting.

2. In a large plastic container with a lid, mix the Chex cereal, cake mix, powdered sugar, and sprinkles lightly together.

3. Pour melted Almond Bark over cereal/cake mix combination.  Put lid on container and shake lightly but thoroughly until cereal is evenly coated.

Tip: If you don’t have a large plastic container or bowl with a lid on hand, feel free to use a paper bag and roll down the top and shake it all together in there.  Just be sure the bottom is sealed well!

Time: approx. 15 minutes

This Strawberry Cupcake Puppy Chow would be absolutely perfect for a party or celebration, served up in cute cupcake liners.  There’s just so many to pick from nowadays.   And don’t forget, there’s a ton of different flavored cake mixes out there.  Use your favorite and make this recipe your own :)  Let us know what you come up with!  Enjoy!!

  1. OH MY WORD!!!! I am so loving this recipe, and will definitely be trying it:-) I am not a huge chocolate fan, so this sounds so much better to me! Take care, Terra

    1. Yes! Please do, especially if you’re not really into chocolate. This is a perfect sweet treat for you :) Thanks for looking!

  2. I just made Smore’s Puppy Chow, recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction, and my boys loved it. I’m going to try this one next to see if it will beat it!

    1. It just goes together so beautifully! And we loved it so much it’s completely gone and has been for a while already :) Thanks for stopping by!

  4. We made a triple batch with the extended fam. We did use the strawberry cake mix, but I used 1-2 tbs more almond bark than called for, made it sticky, but I love almond bark yumm! This stuff is a powerhouse of sugary goodness, kids loved it!

    1. My girls really loved this because of the pink color and the yummy strawberry flavor. Great combo :) Thanks for looking!!

  5. I love puppy chow. This I have never seen before, can’t wait to try. And it’s even more super cute in the little cupcake liners.

  6. I just made this for my daughter’s birthday party. So fun and tastes delish! My first batch clumped up when I followed your directions leaving some poor chex without the yummy goodness. So the second batch I mixed the dry ingredients separately, stirred the almond bark onto the chex first until all were covered, then sprinkled the dry stuff on and stirred. Now all the chex were happily covered with yummy-ness. :) Thanks for the fun recipe!

    1. That’s great you were able to make it work for you! I was able to get great results as written above but everyone’s different. That’s what makes tweaking recipes so much fun :) Thanks for looking and letting us know how it turned out for you!!!

  8. I’m thinking of using strawberry supreme cake mix and chocolate almond bark for chocolate covered strawberry puppy chow. Thoughts?

    1. It was tough, Jaime! I wanted to keep it all for myself ;) We linked up with your party and thanks for looking!
